Menorrhagia

The condition known as menorrhagia (men-or-rage'-ia) is an abnormally heavy and often longer regular menstrual period, and it can be painful, uncomfortable, and extremely inconvenient, while having no other cause than a hormone imbalance.  Or it is possible it is symptomatic of a much more severe condition, including abnormal blood clotting or disorders of the endometrial lining of the uterus. It can be associated with abnormally painful periods (dysmenorrhea) so always see your doctor to rule out anything more serious and to determine the cause of menorrhagia.

Menorrhagia Symptoms
Menorrhagia is considered bleeding in excess of 80ml in one cycle. A regular tampon will hold 5ml of blood when completely soaked, and over one period, you are expected to produce between 5 and 16 times that amount in total.  However, with menorrhagia, you may produce much more than that, and also have issues with clots appearing in your menstrual blood.  For many women, who don’t understand or are unaware of what’s happening with their bodies, it can make them afraid they are experiencing a miscarriage, and cause problems as simple as having to change your tampon and pad every hour (which can be both a physical and financial burden) to becoming lightheaded, dizzy, and even anemic, and therefore unable to function during the regular work day, which then interferes with a woman’s ability to lead a normal lifestyle.

As modern medicine progresses, hormone replacement therapy can help to regulate and even eliminate many of these symptoms, but for women who either do not plan on having children or have already had their children, there are additional measures that can be taken to alleviate the issues, even as the hormones are being adjusted.  Since it can take several months to get newly prescribed bio-identical hormone therapy working properly, shifting the balance in a woman’s body back towards normal, you might want to consider a procedure called in-office ablation (ah-blay'-shun
